I care and I think you do too.
Hello there. Many, many thanks for you support and showing that you care. It is fantastic to see that so many of you did (if your picture isn’t up here yet, don’t worry it will be – we’re running a little behind). It was important to show that, in this the first step, she was not alone and that there are people out there who care and are prepared to listen. The woman that we want to help will hopefully be writing something here soon, but as you can imagine has greater concerns that writing a blog post. But, we can tell you this much; she was incredibly moved by you all. You all gave her the strength to start sorting things out for herself. You have given her back the ability to trust other people. She’s thankfully getting help, but if she needs anymore then we will get in touch we you guys and let you know.
Again, many thanks. Many thanks for all of your offers of help (financial or otherwise). We’ve passed them all on. You’ve been brilliant. Thank you for caring.
Hello. As I mentioned yesterday, Breitenbach asked me to think about something. Actually, it was someone; someone that I have never met before. It is a single mother who is suffering from cancer and struggling to bring up her two children. The woman in question lives in central Germany.
The authorities won’t help her. Her neighbours won’t help her. The father of the children is seemingly unable to help her. She feels completely alone. In the “compassion” post I asked Breitenbach to get in touch with her and let her know we want to help and a dialog has started between us. It’s heart breaking. She feels so completely alone; that no one really gives a damn and that she simply doesn’t have the strength to carry on. She feels that no one cares.
Well, I care. And I think you probably do too.
Day, after day we see posts, articles and tweets about the power of this Internet thingy we all use; this so called social media. Mostly (nearly always) it’s all a bunch of navel gazing rubbish that is of very little use to anyone. Well, I’m asking you to change that. I’m going to ask you to change that for one single person who feels that no one cares.
I’m not going to ask you to donate money. I’m simply going to ask you to give a damn. I’m going to ask you to stop for one minute and think about how you would feel in this woman’s position. I’m going to ask you to stop worrying about the economy, your RSS feeds and how many people follow you on twitter or facebook and give a damn. I believe you can. I just want you to show this woman that you care.
You can either upload a picture of yourself to flickr or your blog and let her know you care:

Or you can make a little video, telling her who you are and where you live and tell her that you care:
I care from Marcus Brown on Vimeo.
It’s such a simple thing. It takes no time at all. But believe me, in this - our first step in helping this woman, it means everything. It really does mean everything to her to know that she’s not alone and that people really do care about her and her children.
If you do this for her, please either drop a note in the comments or send me a mail at marcus@breitenbachundbrown.com (not .de I keep getting that wrong) and let us know where we can find it and we’ll pop your video or photo into this post.
Please, please get involved and help. Please give a damn. Please let her know you care.
(Patrick can you translate to German please?)

Showing you care via social media? Not so hard. Showing you can do something about it? Harder but possible.
Elana Rosen from Just Think.org sent me this link Diary of A Single Mom which is compelling as well. I’ll be posting about both soon on Shaping Youth.

I CARE! I’m an executive coach in the media industry. AND, because I care about Single Parenting and it’s challenges (and huge opportunities for positive change too!), I set up a website to support and empower single mums.
Marcus Brown … looks like you had this first innovative thought (and you Breitenbach) - LOVE that you did! If you share my website info with the amazing mother we’re all caring about … I’ll do my utmost to ensure she’s supported.
To all of you who’re sending out those great thoughts,
Keep caring!!
Stay amazing,
Jennifer
